The challenges are jillion and uncommon every day for PGIMER. But it has remained resolute and focused on its functioning. The pride and ambition are derived from the progressive recovery rate of their patients. National Awards for PGIMER • Under the National Institutional Ranking Framework initiative of Union Minister of Human Resource Development, PGIMER Chandigarh has been ranked number two in the country under Health Sector category. An award was given by Sh Prakash Javdekar, HRD Minister, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi to Prof Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER. • PGIMER Chandigarh has been ranked second in category A of central government institutions. Sh. J.P. Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India handed over a citation and an award of Rs 1.5 crore to Prof Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER, Chandigarh in New Delhi during a function held for bestowing Kayakalp awards to different institutes. • The Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh, has been selected for the prestigious award of the International Society of Blood Transfusion for the year 2018. The award has been conferred in recognition of the Department’s outstanding services; role in voluntary blood donation, implementation of state-of-the-art technologies for blood safety like Nucleic Acid Testing for viral markers; role in education and training activities and research. • The Drug De-addiction and Treatment Centre (DDTC), Department of Psychiatry, PGIMER, Chandigarh received the prestigious National Award as an “Organization of Excellence” for its Outstanding Services in the field of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse, as the best institute under the category “Best Research and Innovation”. The award was conferred by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and it was presented by Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the Hon’ble President of India. State-of-the-art facilities initiated • PGIMER added another feather in its cap by commissioning a new state-of-the-art SPECT gamma camera (D-SPECT), a first of its kind in the whole country, to the already existing Nuclear Cardiology facility of nuclear medicine department located in Advanced Cardiac Centre (ACC) of the Institute. The equipment will be primarily used in evaluating the patients with cardiac diseases especially coronary artery disease. • New cancer treatment, Cryoablation was started at PGIMER. The department of Radiodiagnosis at PGIMER, Chandigarh has acquired the state-of-the-art machine for doing cryoablation of tumours in patients who are not suitable to be treated with surgery. This machine is the first of its kind installed anywhere in the country. The department is now fully equipped to treat unresectable cancers with all the ablation modalities like radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, irreversible electroporation, high intensity focussed ultrasound and now cryoablation, available under one roof. • The Next Generation Sequencing Facility was inaugurated in Advanced Pediatric Centre dedicated to patient care in making important diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic decisions regarding various diseases especially inherited genetic conditions and cancers. • Department of ENT, PGIMER, Chandigarh started its Allergy Clinic in ENT OPD. This is the initial step in sensitizing both the doctors and patients towards prevention and treatment of this very much treatable problem. • PGIMER made it possible for a liver transplant female patient to successfully deliver a child. It is a first such case at the Institute. • PGIMER accomplished another major feat in the complicated transplant surgery by successfully performing its first-ever simultaneous liver & kidney transplant a terminally ill patient suffering from end-stage liver and renal failure. • Neurosurgeons of PGIMER, Chandigarh reported on minimally invasive spinal endoscopy for large intradural spinal tumours in one of the most reputed ‘Spine Journal’. This is probably one of the first in world literature to describe such minimally invasive neurosurgical spinal endoscopy for tumours as large as 7 cm. Important studies • PGI published a rare study with the largest stroke data in the prestigious international journal. Neurosurgeons of PGIMER, Chandigarh published how their department has improved the outcome of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in “STROKE”. This is a prestigious American journal with an impact factor of-of more than 6. SAH is a type of hemorrhagic stroke due to bleeding from ruptured aneurysms in the brain. Patients of SAH often have a sudden severe headache. • Stem cell therapy for liver disease patients got a boost when two studies performed by the Department of Hepatology were published in prestigious international journals Hepatology and Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology. MOU s signed • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between PGIMER, Chandigarh and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) to improve cancer care services as well as training and research in the field of cancer at PGIMER. • PGIMER Chandigarh signed MoU with Coal India Limited for providing Rs 2 crores for thalassemia transplants. New Posts • 176 posts were created to add to the faculty strength this year. 43 posts for OT Technicians have been sanctioned. Projects near completion • Construction of 250 bedded hospital close to Nehru Hospital will be completed by January 2019. • Construction of Satellite Centre at Sangrur will be completed by January 2019. • Formalities for initiating construction of Mother and Child Centre and Neurosciences Centre are through. Work on these projects will be started in January 2019. Patient Friendly Initiatives • The Institute launched the facility of online donations on the Institute website-pgimer.edu.in. • Prof Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER inaugurated an outlet of AMRIT (Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment) Pharmacy in the Advanced Trauma Centre. This is the sixth such outlet for the benefit of PGI patients. • A new Ward of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry for children and adolescents suffering from neuro-developmental disorders was opened. • Four more lifts were installed at Advanced Cardiac Centre for the benefit of patients. With the addition of these lifts, total 9 lifts would be available for the comfort of patients and attendants. • PGIMER planted 250 saplings this monsoon season. 500 mixed species of trees will be planted as per the landscape requirement of the PGI campus out of which 250 have already been planted. Horticulture wing of PGIMER won 20 first prizes and 22-second prizes during the All India Rose Competition/show held at Indian Agriculture Research Institute, New Delhi. 8 first and 9-second prizes during the 46th Rose Festival, 2018 organized by Municipal Corporation at Rose Garden, Sector-16, Chandigarh. • Chapati making machine was installed in the Dietetics Department of Nehru Hospital, PGIMER. Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER thanked Mr Raj Kumar, DGM-LPG and Mr Gagandeep Singh Sodhi, DGM-Retail of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd for the generous contribution to PGIMER, under their CSR initiative. Organ Donation in PGIMER • Cadaver Donation in PGIMER: With 33 cadaver donations since January 2018 till date, PGIMER has to its credit 175 cadaver organ donations, giving a second lease of life to 417 end-stage organ failure patients till date. In this year, 67kidneys, 16 livers, 2 hearts, 7 pancreas and 776 corneas were harvested and transplanted.
