It is a time to take that extra step and convey that you care for the society, particularly those who have been left out and stand at the bottom of the line even when it comes to getting aid to fight disease and death. And what better option can there be than the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Reseach (PGIMER) at Chandigarh. The Poor Patient Assistance Cell (PPAC) has been working to provide financial assistance and guidance to poor and needy patients for treatment at the hospital. Free medical treatment in Emergency/Out Patient Department Indoor is provided to patients who are holders of Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards issued by various state governments or on the recommendation of treating doctor after assessment. PPAC receives donations under Poor Patients Welfare Fund (PPWF) and this donation is eligible for deduction under subclause iii (f) of section 80G (2) of the Income Tax Act. This fund is being used to help patients who are unable to afford treatment. The donations are received from philanthropists, judicial orders, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligations, NGOs and Trusts. The online donation under Poor Patient Welfare Fund has been started from last September and till date approximately Rs 32,56,600 has been received. The account has been opened in coordination with SBI, Medical Institute, Sector-12 Chandigarh. According to a PGI spokesperson, “The utilization of this fund is done by procurement of medicines and surgical items through government-approved agencies and there is an annual audit to ensure transparency.” Since the beneficiary pool of the patients from this fund is quite large therefore in order to create awareness of the provision of online donation, the PGI has appealed to the public to donate generously for this fund.
