Decision went wrong
The Britishers subdued 1857 mutiny. However, it had far-reaching consequences on India. Indeed in their most neglected dreams, they could not have thought the repercussions of their decision. It was the British who awakened India to freedom.
Let’s begin.
Burked revolt of 1857 gave way to a swap in the political and administrative structure in India. The power was consigned directly with the British Crown from East India Company.
Magna Carta
On the 1st of November in 1858, an announcement was made. It was under the popular name ‘Magna Carta’ of Indian civil liberties. It was to take Indian royalties in reliance.
Under it, the British Crown guaranteed unbiased and democratic rule to India. To emphasize it, Hill rulers were compensated for their help and loyalty during the revolt of 1857.
They were sanctioned to return to their constituencies. A few were even rewarded with their bowed constituencies. The level of trust-building exercise mounted when Raja of Chamba was accorded the right to adoption on the failure of their direct hires.
It was the build-up era between the Hill rulers and the British Crown. Like a fireball mist, British generosity was shimmering in Northern India.
Delhi Durbar
Deli Durbar, in 1877 saw Raja Sham Singh of Chamba, Raja Bajai Sen of Mandi and Raja Hira Chand of Bilaspur in the audience during the viceroyalty of Lord Lytton.
The profound relationship and fabricating dependence lead to encroachments by the British in The Hill areas. They imposed control over the jagirs.
They further exercised control over social, political, administrative and economic matters. British decreed that if the Hill ruler were not satisfactory to govern, the Crown would designate an English man to supervise the place.
The rule was not just put in black and white. The British did take over Suket in 1902, Bhajji in 1940, Jubbal from 1859-62, Chamba in 1873, Bushahr in 1866, Keonthal in 1899, Baghal state in 1875,1902 and 1905.
Faulty Friendship
The cordial association of Hill chiefs and the Crown kept thriving.
The hill chiefs revisited Delhi. During the Coronation, Durbar of Delhi on 911. It was in December in 911 when the British capital was moved from Calcutta to Delhi.
World War-1
The unpropitious world war -1 began in 1914 and lasted till 1918. The United Kingdom was heading the Allied powers. India was their colony, and they wanted to increase their army.
Consequently, for world war-1 soldiers were supplied from the Hill states as well. In solidarity, hill chiefs sent men in considerable numbers to world war-1.
This aid became the turning point in the memoir of India. Through world war -1, the Hill populace came in connection with dignified and democratic lives.
This realization induced discontentment. They aspired to feel equal and have rights. Indians were unrolled to the thought of liberty, equality and justice.
The revolution had opened. These men came back to struggle for their liberation. Therefore, hills were a modified place…
